CMM Measurement Plan: What Buyers Should Define Before Inspection
A coordinate measuring machine can collect precise coordinate data, but it does not decide what matters to the part. A useful CMM measurement plan converts design intent into an agreed inspection strategy. Before inspection begins, define the function-critical characteristics, datum strategy, inspection stage, suitable measurement resources and reporting requirements.
This alignment reduces interpretation gaps between engineering, manufacturing, quality and purchasing. It also prevents buyers from receiving a long report that does not clearly show whether the released drawing and purchase requirements were evaluated.

Start with the controlled design definition
Reference the current released drawing, revision and governing model. Units, material condition, general tolerances, geometric controls, surface requirements and notes must agree with the RFQ and purchase order. If model and drawing conflict, state which governs before programming. A report tied to an obsolete revision can be complete as a file and still be unusable for acceptance. Identify function-critical features
Prioritize features that affect assembly, location, sealing, motion, load transfer or alignment. Functional context helps the supplier evaluate access, fixturing, probing direction and the relationship between manufacturing and design datums. It also keeps inspection effort focused on characteristics that control fit or performance.
Establish the datum strategy
State which datum features establish the primary, secondary and tertiary references and whether special conditions apply. The fixture should support the part without hiding required features or introducing uncontrolled distortion. For thin, flexible or unfinished components, agree how the part is restrained and in what condition it is measured.
Define the inspection stage
State whether each requirement applies to first article, in-process or final inspection. Consider operations that can change geometry, including heat treatment, coating, stress relief, machining and assembly. This connects each result to the correct manufacturing condition.
Select suitable measurement resources
A CMM is one resource within a dimensional inspection system. Feature geometry, tolerance, size, access, surface condition, part stability, environment and required uncertainty affect equipment selection. Some characteristics are better evaluated with dedicated gauges, optical systems or surface instruments. Define the requirement first, then select a capable method.
Plan access, setup and sequence
Confirm that the probe can reach required surfaces without collision or excessive repositioning. Stylus configuration, approach direction, part orientation and fixture clearance affect feasibility. Complex parts may need multiple setups; identify those constraints during quotation when they materially affect cost or lead time.
Define sampling and reinspection triggers
Specify whether inspection applies to a first article, every part, an agreed sample or a process-validation event. Sampling should follow the quality agreement, project risk and customer requirements. Define reinspection triggers such as drawing revision, tooling or process change, nonconformance or a significant equipment event.
Specify reporting requirements
Reports should identify the part, drawing revision, lot or serial reference where applicable, inspection date and characteristics. Project-defined fields may include nominal and measured values, limits, deviations, result status and equipment identification. A ballooned drawing can map report rows to drawing requirements. Define whether the buyer needs PDF, spreadsheet, native data or a customer-portal format.
Separate equipment verification from part acceptance
The ISO 10360 series addresses acceptance and reverification testing for coordinate measuring systems in defined configurations. Equipment verification supports confidence in the resource, but it does not define the part's functional requirements or replace a part-specific plan. A polished report alone does not prove that datum construction, probing strategy or acceptance logic was appropriate.
Include the plan in the RFQ package
State the drawing revision, critical characteristics, datum scheme, inspection stage, sampling expectation, report format and applicable customer-specific requirements. Does every custom metal part need a CMM report?
No. Method and reporting scope depend on geometry, tolerances, function, risk and agreed requirements. Select a CMM because it fits the defined task, not because it sounds comprehensive.
Who should define the datum strategy?
The released design establishes datum requirements. Engineering and quality should ensure that setup and alignment interpret them consistently, with supplier input on access and fixturing.
Should a CMM program be created from the CAD model?
CAD data can support programming, but the governing drawing revision, geometric controls, notes and reporting requirements must also be reviewed. State which document governs if information conflicts.
What should a dimensional inspection report contain?
Typical fields include part and revision identification, characteristic mapping, nominal and measured values, limits, result status, date and equipment reference. Specify any first-article template before inspection.
