Cast and Machined Parts: Buyer Guide to Allowance, Datums and Inspection
For cast-and-machined parts, define the casting and machining route together. Identify surfaces that may remain as-cast, features requiring machining, the finished datum system, machining stock and inspection stages. A coordinated RFQ helps suppliers quote the same requirements and exposes missing stock, setup and acceptance risks before tooling.

1. Distinguish as-cast and machined surfaces
Noncritical walls and ribs may remain as-cast when compatible with function. Bearing seats, sealing faces, threads and mounting patterns may need machining. Mark finished interfaces explicitly instead of saying "machine where necessary."
Review draft, parting lines and process variation during DFM. Photographs cannot establish process capability.
2. Agree machining allowance before tooling
Machining allowance is intentional stock for a later finishing operation. Casting tolerance describes permitted variation in the casting condition. They are different requirements, and both affect whether a finished feature will clean up.
Review allowance against casting process, geometry, distortion and locating strategy. ISO 8062-3 provides a casting-tolerance and machining-allowance framework; the drawing and route still need agreement. Resolve insufficient or excessive stock before tooling release.
3. Plan datum transfer and fixtures
The first setup locates a raw casting that contains process variation. Its locating surfaces may differ from the finished-part datums. Agree how the casting is supported, which operation creates the finished datum features and how later setups reference them.
Uneven stock can leave one face short of material. Review clamping, access, bores, mounting faces and hole patterns together. Identify the governing dimensional standard and edition on the drawing.
4. Sequence treatments and finishing
Treatments, straightening, coating and rough machining can change geometry. Define when critical dimensions are created and measured. Review any intermediate treatment and final machining against the specific part.
Specify surface texture, edge and thread condition. Agree written appearance criteria or limit samples separately from dimensional acceptance. "Smooth finish" is not measurable.
5. Control the drawing and models
Supply the drawing and model with revision, units and a precedence rule. Label finished-part and casting models clearly: the casting model can include added stock, draft and process features.

6. Define inspection by manufacturing stage
Separate raw-casting checks, in-process machining checks and final acceptance. Raw checks can confirm stock and locating features; in-process checks protect setups; final inspection evaluates the released finished-part requirements. A raw-casting result does not automatically prove compliance after machining.
Select a CMM, gauge, optical system or conventional instrument for the characteristic and measurement uncertainty involved. Agree which results and certificates must be supplied, their format and sampling frequency. 7. Make supplier responsibility explicit
Ask quotations to identify tooling, casting, treatment, machining, finishing, inspection, documents, packaging and delivery. If different suppliers perform casting and machining, define who owns stock and datum decisions, transport damage, rejected blanks, rework approval and nonconformance disposition.
Ask who reviews DFM, releases the route, maintains traceability and supplies inspection evidence. A combined quotation alone does not demonstrate process control.
8. Compare routes before committing

Frequently asked questions
Should every cast surface be machined?
No. Machine features whose function or acceptance criteria require it. Clearly identify suitable noncritical areas that may remain as-cast.
Is machining allowance the same as casting tolerance?
No. Allowance supplies stock for machining; tolerance limits dimensional variation. The process plan must account for both.
Who defines the machining allowance?
The buyer defines finished-part requirements. Casting and machining specialists propose and agree a manufacturable allowance before tooling release.
When should finished datums be created?
DFM should define the first raw-casting setup, the operation creating finished datum features and their use in later setups and inspection.
Which inspection documents should accompany the parts?
Agree the project-specific package during RFQ review: it may include a ballooned drawing, first-article results, material evidence, process records and final inspection reports.
