Bare steel, plated parts, aluminum, stainless steel and painted components do not have identical corrosion risks. The appropriate control may involve a clean and dry condition, temporary protective oil, an approved corrosion-inhibiting material, a sealed moisture barrier, desiccant or another buyer-approved method. Selection depends on the substrate, finish, journey, climate exposure, storage duration and downstream cleaning limits.
Do not specify a corrosion-control product by habit. State whether residues are acceptable, whether parts will be cleaned before assembly, and whether the buyer requires a defined packaging material or test method.
3. Prevent contact, movement and cosmetic damage
Metal parts can damage one another even when the outer carton or crate remains intact. Use separators, trays, sleeves, caps or individual wrapping where contact could affect sealing surfaces, threads, edges, coatings or cosmetic zones. Heavy parts require positive restraint so they cannot shift during handling, braking, vibration or container movement.
The packaging design should account for center of gravity, lifting points, maximum pack weight, stackability and the safe removal sequence. Small fasteners and loose accessories should be counted, identified and contained separately.
4. Protect critical features deliberately
Identify the surfaces that need special protection in the RFQ or packaging instruction. Typical examples are precision bores, ground faces, threads, sealing lands, sharp edges, connector interfaces and Class A cosmetic surfaces. Protective materials should not introduce contamination, staining, trapped moisture or adhesive residue that conflicts with assembly.
5. Define marks, traceability and documents
State the required part number, drawing revision, purchase-order number, quantity per package, lot or heat traceability, gross and net weight, country-of-origin marking and any buyer-specific label format. Handling symbols should be selected only when they are relevant to the package and route. ISO 780 provides standardized graphical symbols for handling and storage of distribution packages; hazardous-goods instructions are outside its scope.

6. Check destination rules before choosing wood packaging
When raw-wood packaging or dunnage is used in international trade, destination requirements may bring ISPM 15 into scope. The IPPC standard covers phytosanitary measures for raw wood packaging material, including dunnage, and excludes processed wood products such as plywood. The exporter and logistics provider should confirm the applicable destination and marking requirements for the actual shipment.
A wooden crate is not automatically necessary. Part mass, transport mode, route, handling equipment and buyer requirements should determine whether cartons, returnable containers, pallets or crates are appropriate.
7. Validate the pack against the distribution risk
For high-risk, heavy, fragile or repeat shipments, buyers may require documented package validation. ASTM D4169 provides a laboratory framework for evaluating shipping units against distribution hazards. It does not replace the product specification, packaging-material requirements or shipment-specific procedures. Any test level and acceptance criteria should be agreed before quoting.
