How to Choose the Right Metal Casting Process for OEM Parts



Choosing the right manufacturing process is one of the most important decisions in an OEM metal-parts project. The process affects tooling cost, unit price, dimensional accuracy, surface finish, mechanical properties and delivery time. The best choice depends on part geometry, alloy, annual volume and inspection requirements.

Investment Casting





Investment casting, also called lost-wax casting, is suitable for complex shapes, thin sections and detailed features. It can reduce secondary machining when a near-net shape is required. Stainless steel, carbon steel and many alloy steels can be processed. Buyers should consider investment casting when design complexity and surface quality are more important than the lowest tooling cost.





Sand Casting





Sand casting is a flexible option for larger metal parts, lower production volumes and designs that may change during development. Tooling is generally simpler than permanent-mold processes, but the surface is rougher and more machining allowance may be needed. It is widely used for iron, steel and aluminum components.





Die Casting





Die casting is designed for repeatable, higher-volume production of non-ferrous parts, especially aluminum and zinc alloys. It offers good surface finish, thin walls and fast production cycles. The initial tooling investment is higher, so expected annual quantity and product life should be evaluated before selecting this process.





Forging





Forging shapes metal under compressive force and is often selected when strength, fatigue resistance and structural reliability are critical. It is common for load-bearing automotive, machinery and industrial components. Forged blanks usually require CNC machining to achieve final tolerances and functional surfaces.





CNC Machining





CNC machining is ideal for prototypes, low-volume production and features that require tight tolerances. It can also be combined with casting or forging: the near-net-shape process controls material use, while machining produces precision holes, threads, sealing faces and datum surfaces.





How to Select the Best Process





Start with six inputs: the 2D or 3D drawing, target material, annual volume, critical tolerances, surface-finish requirement and inspection standard. Then compare tooling cost, unit cost, lead time and the amount of secondary machining. A design-for-manufacturing review before tooling can identify unnecessary undercuts, difficult wall transitions and tolerance requirements that increase cost without improving function.





What Should an OEM Buyer Include in an RFQ?





A complete request for quotation should include drawings, alloy or material standard, estimated order quantity, annual demand, required heat treatment, surface treatment, inspection level and packaging expectations. Mark critical-to-quality dimensions clearly. If an alternative material or process is acceptable, state this so the supplier can recommend a more economical option.
